Unconventional & crazy tools that professional artists can't keep their hands off from

As an abstract artist, our tools are as diverse and expressive as our art. Each tool brings a unique texture, line, or form to our work, allowing us to convey emotions and ideas without relying on realistic representation.

Unconventional

Silicone Wedge

Catalyst Silicone Wedge

These little geniuses are extremely useful tools for an abstract artist. You can create multiple textures with these, both 2d and 3d.

  • They are medium soft and come in various shapes

  • Priced around 500 to 600 for each piece (if Princeton catalyst wedge, you can get from local brands as well for a much cheaper rate)

  • It can be used to apply both texture pastes and colours. (the sky is the limit to experiment)

Paddle Brush

Liquitex Paddle Brush

These are excellent for freehand painting and come in various sizes and specifications. You can buy them from multiple brands but Liquitex is one of the best ones for it.

  • Nylon or taklon bristles

  • Extremely short handles

  • Flat in shape

Squeegees

Squeegee

These were previously used only for screen printing as it pushed ink through the mesh onto a surface but soon artists started using it to create their abstract pieces. It comes in various forms and sizes to suit different applications.

  • It comes with a flat, smooth rubber blade

  • It can be used to spread texture paste as well as colours (as always the sky is the limit to experiment - Do let us know what you did with it)

Brayers

Rubber Brayer

This tool too was primarily used in printing however artists could not hold themselves back from experimenting with these and as a result, created masterpieces.

  • Initially, they were made with wood but soon it changed to rubber with a metal clamp and a plastic handle.

  • Plain surfaces are best friends of these little rascals (wink, wink).

  • Works best with soft body colours.
