Artwork By Therese Lydia Joseph
As abstract artists, we often find ourselves immersed in a world of shapes, colours, and emotions, where traditional rules of composition and representation do not strictly apply. While exhilarating, this freedom can also make it challenging to determine when a piece of abstract art is complete. Here are some insights and guidelines to help you decide when your abstract artwork has reached its perfect state of completion.

Simple Yet Effective Tricks
Trust your Intuition: If you feel fulfilled and satisfied when you look at your work, it may be finished. Your emotional response to your artwork is a powerful indicator.
Reflecting your Vision: Does it convey the message, emotion, or concept you aimed for? Ensuring your artwork aligns with your vision can help signal its completion.

Check its balance: Assess the visual balance of your composition. Are the elements harmoniously arranged? A well-balanced piece feels cohesive and complete, with no area demanding undue attention. Turn and see your painting to check it’s balance
Step Back and Observe: Take breaks and view your work from a distance or in different lighting. This can help you see the piece with fresh eyes and notice aspects you might have missed up close.

Detail and Complexity: Consider the level of detail and complexity. Sometimes, adding more can overcomplicate the piece, while other times it may need more to feel complete. Striking the right balance is key.
Letting Go: Sometimes, knowing when to stop is about letting go. Avoid the urge to overwork the piece. Trust in your skills and intuition.
